The WICT Heartland Book Club is back, and this spring we’ll be reading “The Queen of Katwe” by Tim Crothers. The book was developed into a major motion picture starring Academy Award winner Lupita Nyong’o and David Oyelowo and directed by Mira Nair. This is an astonishing and inspirational true story of Phiona Mutesi — a teenage chess prodigy from the slums of Uganda. The Queen of Katwe is a remarkable and riveting book that shows how “Phiona’s story transcends the limitations of the chessboard” (Robert Hess, US Grandmaster).
We’ll discuss the book together each Wednesday from May 26–June 30 with special guests who lead the discussions, and we’ll end this book club by discussing the movie.
